Handprint Animals

The project involved using their handprints to create various animal shapes. To begin, the students were asked to select an animal that they wanted to make using their handprints.  Some popular choices included fish, elephants, and giraffes.

Once they had chosen their animal, the students painted their handprints onto a piece of paper. They then used colored watercolors, pencils, markers, or paint to transform their handprints into the animal of their choice. For example, if a student chose to create a lion, they would add a mane and facial features to their handprint to create the likeness of the animal.

Throughout the project, the students were encouraged to experiment with different techniques and colors to create texture and depth in their artwork. They were also encouraged to create a background/habitat for the animal.

As an extension activity, I could use this to talk about certain animals and their habitats, and then the students could create an animal that would live in that habitat. Example: Talk about the animals in the ocean and then have them create any animal that would live in the ocean along with the habitat.
